My husband is having more and more difficulty managing buttons. He just said he wished that all of his shirts had snaps. Does anyone know where these types of shirts are available? I checked Penny's catalog and tried to find something on the Internet with no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try the Penny's catalogue for special needs? It is a separate small one with items not in the store or the regular one.

You might try western apparel stores. Western shirts frequently have snaps.

The Assistive Technology Expo. provides valuable information about quality products and services available to individuals with disabilities and Healthcare professionals. Shirts with a velcro closure (plackets have buttons to look like "normal" shirts) seem to be more common than shirts with snaps.Adaptive Clothing or use the following URL: http://blvd.com/Adaptive_Clothing/.
The last post mentioned the Penney's Special Needs Catalog: to get it, call 800-222-6161.

Oh, wait! STOP THE PRESSES! Will your husband wear Western-style shirts? Wrangler's western wear comes with either buttons or snaps, and they look GREAT! Well, maybe the hunky-looking models are what makes them look great, but I'd bet they'd look pretty darn good even on PeeWee Herman. Go to the Wrangler page Under Western Men, click Shirts. Several of those shirts are available with snaps. An alternative is to go to http://www.wrangler.com/ to select the appropriate geography. Once in the correct portion of the globe, execute a search for "shirt snaps" (no quotes) to find Wrangle shirts with snaps.

Western style" shirts often have snaps. For a dressier look, it works to sew the buttons ON TOP of the buttonholes, and sew Velcro under and opposite each button. A lot of work, but worth it. I've done this also on pants where the button or snap at the waist was too hard for my husband to manage. Maybe all PD people should buy stock in the mfgr of Velcro ! My husband also has shoes with Velcro (Dr.Scholl's) and they are a breeze.....

Another company to investigate would be Caring Concepts. They manufacture clothing for "special needs" people. They have a really nice catalogue, too. They can be reached at:

Having trouble buttoning shirts was one of the first problems we encountered with PD. My husband had so much trouble with his dress shirts, most had button down collars. One day I went into the closet and buttoned all those little collar buttons..I thought it would lessen his frustration. We had a good laugh when he reminded me he couldn't get his ties on. So, I had to go unbutton them all. Now that he is retired, he seldom wears a dress shirt. He prefers the polo type shirt, 3 buttons, one or two of which you don't even have to be buttoned, short sleeves in the summer, long in the winter. The nice ones look good under a sport coat for a more dressed up look. I think snaps would almost be as difficult as buttons.
