Lip Soreness

Here's a puzzlement... My Mom, 82 and in a nursing home, has been on Sinamet for about 2 years. For the past month, we have noticed her lower lip is constantly swollen and puffy (it looks like she had a silicone injection!). She complains of dry, scaly lips and sores in the corners of her mouth. We have tried every topical thing around from Vaseline, to Blistex, calendula, boroleum, A&D ointment, to no avail. The doctor says "it's nothing" (?!) but it is uncomfortable for her to eat and we are wondering if anyone has had this sort of problem. It almost looks like she is getting a cold sore, but nothing really blossoms. Could it be connected to the "alligator skin" she experiences in patches on her face from time to time and on which we use a cortisone cream? Any advice is appreciated.

The symptoms you describe could be signs of a B vitamin deficiency. I suggest you discuss this with her physician as soon as possible, and see if s/he will OK a B complex. If so, and if she is using Sinemet, the B complex should be taken about 2 hours apart from the Sinemet, as the large amount of B6 will interfere with levodopa absorption.

B vitamin deficiencies are not at all uncommon in people with PD, and some experts go so far as to suggest B complex routinely. I think it's better to assess the individual's needs; certainly her own physician will be in the best position to make this decision.
