Hi, Would any caregivers know if there are any exercise videos available for elderly PWP? The physical therapist is starting my mom on a regular exercise program next week, but I understand that she will only work with mom until mom can do them on her own. I am worried that when she no longer has anyone working with her that she will slack off. Thought that if she could exercise with a video that that would help to motivate her. Thanks for any help.

You might want to check out this page or paste the following URLnto your browser:

These are not exercise videos for PWP's specifically, but are directed for seniors. There are lots of gentle exercise videos, some for people with limited mobility, exercise videos for people in wheelchairs, aquatic exercise videos, and some for things like tai chi.

Just give it a look and follow the links for details.

There is a series on Arm Chair Fitness at the following URL:

She found out about them when they were used by the staff while she was hospitalized. We have the set of four, but she prefers "Aerobics."

Each cassette carries a disclaimer that "...everyone should consult his or her doctor before undertaking a new exercise regime."

I believe that the price has increased since we purchased the set approximately 2-3 years ago.

Another good video is "Gentle Fitness" ( http://www.gentlefitness.com ) which has won an award from the American Med. Assn.

It has a variety of levels of exercise and is recommended for PWPs as well as other conditions. The video comes with a 20 page exercise guide. It can be ordered from 1-800-566-7780--sorry I forget how much it cost, but the website may tell. Exercise is definitely good for PWPs---hope she will do it.

Exercise is important for a person with parkinson's. The maintenance of normal muscle tone and function is an important aspect of the treatment of Parkinsons. These links might be a source of comfort.

Everyone knows that "exercise" is a good thing for those with Parkinson's --- and that it is good for the care partner, too! But doing exercise --- that is another thing.

Parkinson's Disease - Fitness Counts
A regular exercise program, customized to meet the needs of individuals with movement disorders, should be a key component in any comprehensive treatment plan for people living with Parkinson's disease.

Researchers at Tufts University have developed a program of strength training that is helpful in preventing and treating osteoporosis.

Click here to get more information about the program or use the following URL: http://www.strongwomen.com.

I've been following these recommendations for two years, ever since a bone scan revealed osteopenia (a precursor of osteoporosis); the exercises are not too bad!
